Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa vowed to hold perpetrators of violence behind the conflict in Syria’s coastal region accountable, the Middle East Eye reported on March 11th.
The overall death toll of “extrajudicial killings” since March 6th is 779, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR). Violence began on March 6th when Assad loyalists attacked civilians of the Alawi community, who were predominantly targeted.
Al-Sharaa said, “we fought to defend the oppressed, and we won’t accept any blood being shed unjustly, nor will we allow any incident to go unpunished, even among those closest to us”.
The interim president acknowledged the retaliatory nature of the affair, referring to the violence as “an opportunity for revenge”.
However, Al-Sharaa reassured worldwide onlookers that justice would be served in Syria.
Al-Sharaa condemned Assad loyalists for sustained violence after multiple groups have entered from Syria’s coastal regions.
Al-Sharaa also held out the possibility of restoring ties with Moscow, with Russia being Assad’s backer throughout the war. Russia is also trying to maintain two key military bases in Syria.
According to Al-Sharaa, resolving the violence is a priority. He expressed desire to “rectify the situation as much as we can”.
Hinting at a party, Al-Sharaa said the unnamed party had “lost out from the new reality in Syria.” Many saw this as a reference to long-standing ally Iran. Tehran has said that it was not involved in the unrest
