Following flooding in the town of Mokwa in Nigeria, at least 200 people have died and a further 500 have gone missing, as rescue efforts have stopped, Africanews via AP reported on June 4th.
Torrential rain on May 29th prompted extreme flooding within hours, as residents faced deadly conditions and bridges as well as roads were destroyed.
During the African nation’s wet season, flooding is anticipated but long periods of no rainfall coupled with heavy rainfall have prompted some of the most severe flooding in six decades. Heavy rainfall and the fall of a dam in the city of Maiduguri in September 2024, prompted heavy flooding which killed at least 30.
