UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the Gaza crisis is worsening rapidly, Middle East Eye via Reuters reported on June 2nd.
Speaking in Scotland, he called the conditions “intolerable” and stressed the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid.
Starmer confirmed that the UK is working with allies to ensure faster and larger aid deliveries. He noted that current aid levels of aid are insufficient and have lead to devastation in the Palestinian enclave.
The UK had previously taken steps to raise the alarm about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy called Gaza the world’s most dangerous place for aid workers, The New Arab reported on April 2nd.
He urged Israel to conclude its investigation into the airstrike that killed seven World Central Kitchen staff. Lammy said over 400 aid workers have died due to Israeli attacks since October 2023 and urged for safety provisions.
Additionally, Lammy urged Israel to stop attacking hospitals in Gaza, Middle East Eye reported on April 13th. He condemned repeated strikes on Al-Ahli Hospital and emphasised that diplomacy, not continued violence, is the path to lasting peace in the region.
Also, on May 1st, Middle East Eye reported and Levantis cited, that Lammy confirmed ongoing talks with France and Saudi Arabia about recognising a Palestinian state.
He addressed the House of Lords’ International Relations and Defence Committee, calling Palestinian statelessness unacceptable. Lammy emphasised his support for a two-state solution.
