Yair Lapid, the Israeli opposition leader, has urged Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to approve a truce deal, which has been brokered by an American envoy, Middle East Eye reported on May 29th.
On X, Lapid said: “Israel must publicly and immediately accept the outline published this morning by American mediator Steve Witkoff.”
The opposition leader also emphasised that the prime minister “has a full safety net” from Lapid to give the proposal the green light. Meanwhile, Israel’s forces have stormed Duma, located to the south of Nablus, in the run up to homes being destroyed, Al Jazeera reported on May 29th.
Israeli far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich conditioned their support for Netanyahu on territorial expansion in Gaza and the West Bank. Marchers shouted “death to Arabs” while moving through Jerusalem’s Old City and assaulting Palestinians, according to Middle East Eye. Smotrich addressed the crowds. He said: “We are conquering the Land of Israel, liberating Gaza, settling Gaza, and defeating the enemy.”
Last week, ex-Prime Minister of Israel Ehud Olmert denounced Israel’s military activity in Gaza, claiming the government has murdered innocent Palestinians. Olmert declared in a BBC interview on May 27th that Israel’s actions in Gaza are “very close to a war crime.”
The Middle East Eye reported on April 21st, that a Kantar Institute poll shared by Kan, Israel’s public broadcaster, presented Israeli views on the Gaza conflict. The survey revealed 56% of Israelis back a deal to free Hamas-held hostages in exchange for ending the Gaza conflict. However 22% opposed such a deal.
