Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has said that an arms embargo on Israel would prompt another Holocaust and would cause the nation to be eliminated, Middle East Eye reported on May 29th.

Saar had been talking on May 27th at a global antisemitism conference, which took place in Jerusalem. Saar said: “If, God forbid, the calls and actions of countries and politicians for an arms embargo on Israel succeed, the result will be the destruction of Israel and a second Holocaust.”

He continued: “This is essentially a way to deprive the Jewish people of the means to defend themselves. Means that they so lacked during the long years of exile and during the Holocaust.”

The remarks have come against a backdrop of Spain urging European nations to halt arms deliveries. At a “Madrid Group” meeting, Spain’s foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albares, urged a halt on Europe’s partnership deal with Israel. He also demanded a ban on weapon deliveries to Israel.

Brazil, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UK also attended the meeting. The United States, Germany, and Italy are the nations that provide Israel with most of its weapons. Several countries, like France, Spain, and the UK, have paused weapon deliveries or halted export approvals.

Middle East Eye reported on May 7th that the UK kept sending arms to Israel. This continued even after the government suspending 30 arms export licences in September 2024.

The Palestinian Youth Movement, Workers for a Free Palestine, and Progressive International cited this Israeli Tax Authority data. The data showed that Israel sent 8,630 military weapons to the UK, in spite of halted licenses.

Officials classify the military weapons as “bombs, grenades, torpedoes, mines, missiles and similar munitions of war and parts thereof.”

The UK, France, and Canada warned Israel of sanctions if it doesn’t cease its military campaign in Gaza. The three nations pressed Israel to allow immediate entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and to end it military activity in the enclave.

The countries stated that the settlements are “illegal and undermine the viability of a Palestinian state and the security of both Israelis and Palestinians.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded by alleging the three nations are bolstering Hamas. He asserted the countries stand “on the wrong side of justice.”
