Heavy rainfall has caused the deaths of at least 25 people in Rivers State in Nigeria, emergency officials have said, as climate change and planning issues continue to affect the country’s infrastructure and its population’s safety.

The rainfall took place in Okrika, south Nigeria, resulting in flooding and landslides, Africanews via agencies reported on May 30th. The flooding has caused people to become homeless and has prompted panic in impacted areas.

Inadequate urban planning, obstructed drainage systems and the climate disaster are causing floods to be more dangerous and to happen more often in Nigeria. This has prompted authorities to urge for stronger infrastructure.
