France pushes Europe to recognise Palestinian state

France is pushing European nations, including the UK, to recognise a Palestinian state during a UN conference scheduled for June, according to Middle East Eye via Politico reported on May 28th.

A French diplomat revealed that French President Emmanuel Macron believes such recognition could help recommence peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. The diplomat highlighted the urgency of the two-state solution, stressing that it faces growing threats due to ongoing conflict, the displacement of Palestinians, and increasing violence by extremist settlers.

Israel has condemned the move, claiming it rewards the activities of Palestinian militants. Despite this, Macron hopes the recognition of Palestine will be part of a broader diplomatic effort. He aims to secure parallel recognition of Israel from several Arab states. The conference, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia, may become a turning point in international efforts to revive peace talks in the region.

Middle East Eye via AFP reported on April 10th that the Palestinian Authority welcomed France’s plan to recognise Palestine, calling it a step toward justice and a two-state solution. Meanwhile, Israel’s foreign minister, Gideon Saar, strongly opposed the move, calling it a reward for terrorism and Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu also criticised President Macron’s recognition plan, calling it dangerous and misguided, France24 reported via AFP on April 14th and Levantis cited. In response, the Palestinian foreign ministry condemned Netanyahu’s remarks, accusing him of rejecting peace and favouring violence over diplomacy.

Additionally, the UK is actively working with France and Saudi Arabia to recognise Palestinian statehood ahead of a UN conference, as reported by Middle East Eye on May 1st. The UK’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, emphasised the urgent need for a two-state solution and insisted that Palestinians must not remain without a state.
