Former Syrian rebel imprisoned for a decade over war crimes

An ex-Syrian Islamist rebel spokesperson has been imprisoned for a decade by a French court for his involvement in the violence carried out during the Syrian civil war, Al-Monitor via AFP reported on May 28th.

Ex-spokesman for the group Jaish al-Islam, Majdi Nema, was found guilty by a court in Paris for being complicit in war crimes. He was found guilty of assisting the delivery of war crimes and forcing minors between the ages of 15 and 18 to fight.

A rights lawyer for Syrian civil groups, Marc Bailly, said: “We are relieved.” Bailly also said: “Today justice was served first and foremost for Syrians.”
