France is urging European nations, such as the UK, to recognise a Palestinian state at a UN conference in June, Middle East Eye via Politico reported on May 28th.

An anonymous French diplomat told Politico that President Emmanuel Macron of France had been hoping the declaration at the conference could prompt peace negotiations to recommence between Israel and the Palestinians.

The diplomat said: “The two-state solution is more necessary than ever but it has been more undermined than ever due to the war, the displacement [of Palestinians] and the violence of extremist settlers.” Israel has denounced the recognition of Palestine as a reward to the operations of Palestinian militants.
