Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right finance minister, declared his intention to expand Israel’s territory and settle Gaza, as reported by Middle East Eye on May 26th.
Speaking to crowds in Jerusalem’s Old City during Jerusalem Day celebrations, Smotrich addressed supporters. He stated that Israel is “liberating Gaza” and “defeating the enemy.”
Smotrich also claimed that, with divine support, Israel would “bring about complete redemption” and “rebuild the Temple.” His remarks referred to the al-Aqsa Mosque, which settlers had raided.
On April 8th, The Middle East Eye reported, and Levantis cited, that Bezalel Smotrich pledged to continue blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza. He insisted that no supplies would enter the region. This stance, following the Gaza border closure on March 2nd, worsened Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, with more than 1,400 Palestinians killed and thousands more wounded since March 18th.
Additionally, Smotrich, decided to stay in the coalition government despite his earlier threat to resign if fighting in Gaza stopped, The New Arab and agencies reported on January 28th. He opposed the then ceasefire deal, which saw the exchange of Palestinian prisoners for Israeli hostages. He claimed the agreement endangers Israeli security. Although tensions grew, Prime Minister Netanyahu urged him to remain. Smotrich agreed but warned he would quit if Hamas is not fully defeated.
According to The New Arab on January 19th, Bezalel Smotrich condemned the ongoing ceasefire with Hamas, calling it a “very serious mistake” and a “surrender.” He urged Israel to occupy Gaza and set up a temporary military government. Smotrich also threatened to quit Netanyahu’s coalition and topple the government if it refuses to resume full military control over Gaza.
