An Israeli strike at dawn on May 26th caused 36 deaths at a school in Gaza City, following Spain’s call for the war on the enclave to end on May 25th, according to France 24 with AFP and AP.
Over 55 people suffered wounds as a result of the strike on the north Gaza school, according to the head of the Gaza health ministry’s emergency service, Fahmy Awad. A father and his five children were among those killed, according to Awad.
Another airstrike on a residence killed 19 individuals, including five women and two children, Shifa Hospital in Gaza City confirmed. The hospital reported that it had received the bodies. Lethal strikes also hit areas near Deir el-Balah, Beit Lahia in the north, and Khan Younis in the south.
Gaza’s civil defence agency stated an Israeli strike in Khan Younis killed nine children of two married doctors. The Israeli army added it was still looking into the reports.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed it struck “a Hamas and Islamic Jihad command and control centre,” according to the BBC on May 26th. The IDF claimed terrorists used the area “to plan… attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops.” The organisation also accused Hamas of utilising “the Gazan population as human shields.”
Images and footage on online platforms showed large fires and revealed badly burned victims, including children, and critically wounded survivors.
The BBC reported on May 20th, that Palestinian medics reported over 38 deaths from Israeli air strikes within 30 minutes of the attack. The Hamas-run civil defence agency said rescue teams faced major difficulties reaching the wounded. Consequently, Israel issued a large evacuation order for Gaza’s civilians amid intense attacks and a severe equipment shortages.
Meanwhile, Spanish foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albares, called for sanctions to be imposed on Syria.
He declared humanitarian aid must be delivered to Gaza “massively, without conditions and without limits, and not controlled by Israel.” Albares referred to the region as humanity’s “open wound.”
