WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged Israel to show mercy in Gaza and allow the entry of food and medical aid, saying the war causes deep harm to both sides, Al-Monitor via AFP reported on May 22nd.
He delivered his plea during the WHO’s yearly assembly, where he held in tears and recalled his own wartime experiences.
Tedros condemned the weaponisation of basic needs like food and medicine, calling it deeply immoral. He said only a political solution can bring lasting peace.
On May 22nd, the UN began delivering around 90 aid trucks to Gaza. WHO officials warned that Gaza’s health system is collapsing, with only 19 hospitals still functioning. They called the widespread destruction of medical facilities “systematic” and demanded an end to the cycle.
On April 24th, Middle East Eye reported via Wafa, and Levantis cited, that Gaza faces its worst malnutrition crisis, with children in extreme danger due to lack of food and infant formula. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital’s director, Khalil al-Daqran, warned that 200,000 Palestinians with chronic illnesses may die because of medicine shortages.
Additionally, Donald Trump acknowledged the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza, stating, “a lot of people are starving,” according to Al-Monitor via AFP on May 16th. His comments followed a regional tour that excluded Israel. Trump promised to address the crisis but gave no details, as Gazans suffer with the ongoing strikes.
The Associated Press reported on May 17th that Arab leaders met in Baghdad to demand an immediate end to Israeli attacks on Gaza and the unconditional entry of humanitarian aid. They pledged reconstruction support, rejected forced displacement of Palestinians, and called for a two-state solution while Egypt and Qatar pursued mediation.
