Israel celebrates country’s capture of East Jerusalem

The police of Israel were operating near the walls of the Old City in Jerusalem on May 26th before a yearly event which celebrates Israel’s capture of Jerusalem’s east, according to Al-Monitor via AFP.

Jerusalem Day, which means “Yom Yerushalayim” in Hebrew, pays homage to what Israel sees as the unification of the city, which it controlled during the Arab-Israeli war of 1967.

On an annual basis, Israeli nationalists in their thousands, with many being religious Jews, walk through Jerusalem and its Old City waving the flag of Israel, dancing, and at times shouting out provocative slogans.
