China criticised Israel, after its troops shot at an area near diplomats who were on a trip to the occupied West Bank, Middle East Eye reported on May 22nd.

In a Beijing press briefing, spokesperson for the foreign ministry, Mao Ning, said “China firmly opposes any acts endangering the safety of diplomatic personnel.”

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated: “China urges relevant sides, especially Israel, not to take any escalatory moves,” Anadolu Agency reported on May 22nd.

The troops opened fire as European and Arab officials visited the Jenin refugee camp, which has been targeted by Israeli attacks. Mao said: “We demand the launch of a full investigation so that similar incidents do not happen again.”

The Israeli forces, defying diplomatic standards, fired shots as a group of 35 ambassadors, consuls, and diplomats were heading to the Jenin refugee camp. Ahmed al-Deek, an assistant to the Palestinian foreign minister said the camp has been under blockade since January 21st. Al-Deek, who accompanied the delegation, said the gunfire was intended to intimidate them and stop their entry.

The ongoing blockade and aggressive actions like these have increased international pressure on Israel to change its approach. On May 19th, Canada, France, and the UK warned they would take “concrete” action if Israel continues its Gaza assault, Reuters reported. They also said Israel must allow humanitarian aid to enter the territory.

This statement shows a major shift in policy by Western nations once strong allies of Israel. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu replied on May 19th through X about this matter. He said: “The leaders in London, Ottowa and Paris are offering a huge prize for the genocidal attack on Israel on October 7 while inviting more such atrocities.”
