A group of Italian lawmakers and members of the European Parliament (MEPs) visited the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza on May 18th, where they called for urgent humanitarian aid to be delivered to the enclave.

Toys had been put on the ground as a gesture of solidarity with Gaza’s children. The lawmakers also reportedly criticised Europe’s lack of action surrounding the Gaza conflict, Middle East Eye via AFP reported. MEP Cecilia Strada stated that Europe had done nothing to stop the ongoing conflict.

President of the NGO Associazione Ricreativa Culturale Italiana, Walter Massa, noted no aid had passed through the border for months. He described the scene as dire, with explosions heard just 12 kilometres away from where they had been situated.

Since March 2nd, Israeli authorities, working with Egypt, have kept the crossings closed. Humanitarian organisations have strongly condemned this blockade.

On May 13th, rights groups and NGOs filed a lawsuit against the UK government, alleging it has breached international law, as reported by Middle East Eye and cited by Levantis.

They argued that supplying fighter jet parts to Israel during the Gaza war amounts to unlawful actions. The Palestinian organisation Al-Haq led the case and receives support from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Oxfam, and others.

Additionally, on May 13th, over 380 film professionals condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza in an open letter published before the Cannes Film Festival, according to Middle East Eye. Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Pedro Almodóvar, and Ruben Östlund described the attacks as “genocide” in the letter.
