Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Israel should be excluded from the Eurovision Song Contest due to the Gaza war, Arab News via AFP reported on May 19th.
He referenced Russia’s exclusion since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, saying that “therefore Israel shouldn’t [participate] either, because what we cannot allow is double standards in culture…Spain’s commitment to international law and human rights must be constant and must be coherent. Europe’s should be too.”
Despite consistent protests calling for Israel’s exclusion, singer Yuval Raphael was still allowed to compete and ultimately secured second place, coming close to beating Austria, according to the BBC on May 18th.
