The president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, arrived on May 19th in the US with the hope that he can recover bilateral ties amid ongoing tensions between the nations, according to Africanews and AP.
Ramaphosa is especially hoping to rekindle relations concerning trade. Since US President Donald Trump entered his most recent presidential term, he has withdrawn financial aid to the African country, expelled its ambassador and has argued that South Africa is carrying out a genocide on its white population.
The US last week brought in 59 white South Africans as refugees. They alleged they faced oppression in the African nation.
