Israeli strikes kill 80 in Gaza as hostage negotiations take place

At least 80 people reportedly died in Gaza due to Israeli strikes on May 14th, as talks for the liberation of hostages went ahead in Qatar, according to Al-Monitor via AFP.

Mohammad Awad, an emergency doctor at Gaza’s Indonesian Hospital, told AFP that his department could not effectively deal with those wounded. He attributed this to supply shortages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister spoke with US envoy Steve Witkoff and his team about “the issue of the hostages and the missing.” Witkoff stated Trump had “a really productive conversation” with Qatar’s emir about a Gaza agreement. He added: “We are moving along and we have a good plan together.”

Clashes continued in Gaza, where the official of civil defence, Mohammed al-Mughayyir said to AFP that Israeli attacks killed 80 people since dawn. He specified the strikes killed 59 people in the northern region of Gaza.

On April 22nd, Israeli air strikes in Gaza killed at least 25, according to the Palestinian Civil Defence, according to Middle East Eye via AFP. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported Israeli assaults killed at least 51,000 and injured 116,343 since October 7th 2023, Middle East Eye also reported.

The latest negotiations concerning the release of all hostages took place in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Hasan Moqbel, a Palestinian who lost family members, said: “Those who don’t die from air strikes die from hunger, and those who don’t die from hunger die from lack of medicine.”

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres demanded “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, unimpeded humanitarian access and an immediate cessation of hostilities” in Gaza, Anadolu Agency reported on May 14th.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as “ever more dramatic and unjustifiable,” France 24 reported on May 14th.
