Human Rights Watch (HRW) has denounced the US’s plan to move migrants to Libya, claiming this makes the western country complicit in severe abuse facing migrants, Middle East Monitor reported on May 13th.

The rights group referred to the plan as a “dangerous step resembling previous European cooperation with Libyan authorities on migration.”

Associate Middle East and North Africa director at the rights group, Hanan Salah, condemned the idea of providing more detainees to Libya, arguing that it is long-established that the country has “horrific detention conditions.” Salah described Libyan detention centers as “hellholes,” and said refugees in Libya are not safeguarded.
