According to the SBU the spy group was operated by a “staff officer of Hungarian military intelligence” and that the operation was made to search for findings on weaknesses in Ukraine’s military protection of western areas.
The security organisation said one of the two arrested, who was a 40-year-old veteran from the town of Berehove, which had a mostly Hungarian-born population, had been enlisted in 2021 as a sleeper agent.
The organisation said he was “activated” by a handler last year and asked to collate details. It claimed the man had accepted money for giving information and assisting with finding more recruits to join the group of informants.
The SBU said: “By forming an agent network, foreign intelligence hoped to expand the range of information collection, including obtaining data from frontline and frontline regions.”
Both suspects have been accused of high treason, which could carry a life imprisonment sentence. Szijjártó stated that his country had not been given any evidence to support these allegations. He said: “If we receive any details or official information, then we will be able to deal with this. Until then, I must classify this as propaganda that must be handled with caution.”
On May 9th, a video was posted on Facebook, in which he said: “Today we have expelled two spies from Hungary working under diplomatic cover at Ukraine’s embassy in Budapest.”
