US will withdraw $50m in health aid to Zambia over medicine misuse

The US said on May 8th that it will withdraw $50 million in yearly funding to Zambia because of what it referred to as the organised theft of donated medicines and medical provisions, according to Africanews and AP.
Michael Gonzales, the US ambassador to Zambia said the decision was hard but that it took place following continued warnings to the Zambian government to protect the crucial medicines.
These include vital medicines for malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis. Gonzales explained that in 2021, the US found that drugs and medical provisions that should have been given free of charge to the Zambian people were sold by pharmacies within the country.
