UAE state media reported that security services had foiled an attempt by Sudanese military leaders and others to unlawfully give ammunition to the Sudanese army, Middle East Monitor via WAM news agency reported on April 30th.

According to the WAM news agency, UAE authorities discovered approximately five million rounds of ammunition aboard a private plane at an airport and proceeded to make several arrests.

Although, WAM did not name the suspects or specify the airport, it confirmed that the aircraft carried 7.54 x 62mm Goryunov-type ammunition. “The defendants were arrested during an inspection of ammunition in a private aircraft at one of the country’s airports,” WAM said.

The WAM report revealed that the weapons transfer plot involved several individuals, including Sudan’s former intelligence chief, Salah Gosh. Meanwhile, Sudan’s armed forces, which have fought a two-year civil war against Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), offered no immediate response.

Notably, the Sudanese army has more than once accused the UAE of supplying arms to the RSF. A charge the UAE has denied. Sudan has escalated the dispute by filing a genocide case against the UAE at the International Court of Justice, Al-Monitor reported on April 10th. This latest incident marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict, adding fuel to an already volatile regional situation.
