More than 400 detained in Istanbul May Day demonstrations

The Police of Istanbul detained over 400 on May 1st during May Day protests, which were the biggest act of resistance since the demonstrations that took place in April due to Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu’s arrest.

Ali Yerlikaya, Turkey’s Interior Minister late on May 1st said that 407 individuals were detained in Istanbul, increasing the former figure of 384 given by the Governor’s Office of the city, according to Al-Monitor via Reuters.

The locations of the detentions were not issued in the statement. The majority of the protestors were taken into police detention as they headed for Taksim Square in Istanbul.
