Columbia University protestors crackdown causes division in US govt

The US Justice Department has seen its members divided, with some wanting Columbia University’s student protestors to face consequences as well as those who think such actions are not justified and a breach of First Amendment rights.

Emil Bove III’s investigation was conducted by the civil rights division, which has safeguarded minority groups’ rights. The investigation has prompted a negative response from a federal magistrate judge and caused lawyers to leave the division, Middle East Eye via The New York Times reported on May 1st.

After Barnard College students protested against their classmates being expelled on February 26th, Bove asked the department to look into the membership of the student group, Columbia University Apartheid Divest (Cuad).
