Israeli forces detain five Palestinians, including a journalist

Israeli forces arrested five Palestinians from Jenin early on April 29th, including a journalist, after conducting several overnight raids, according to Middle East Eye via the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Ali Samoudi, a reporter for Al-Quds newspaper, was arrested after Israeli troops entered his home in the Al-Zahraa neighbourhood.

Israeli forces arrested Shaima Abu Ghali, Durgham Al-Saadi, and Baha Al-Saadi from the eastern neighbourhood of the city. Israeli forces also arrested Ya’rab al-Sakran in Al-Marah following a separate operation.

Israeli forces frequently arrest Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, especially in Jenin, where military activity has accelerated. The Middle East Eye reported on April 1st that the conflict in Gaza had killed 209 journalists since the start of the conflict. This includes Palestinian journalist Mohammed al-Bardawil, who died together with his wife and three children after a strike hit his home, as reported by Levantis.

A study from Brown University’s Watson Institute, as reported by Al Jazeera on April 2nd, indicated that Israeli attacks have killed 232 journalists in Gaza—a figure higher than journalist deaths recorded in any armed conflict since the US Civil War in the 1800s.

The study referenced Reporters Without Borders (RSF), recording 35 cases where Israeli military operations appeared to have intentionally targeted journalists.
