Syrian military faction says leader has been arrested in UAE

Two people from a military faction which now forms part of the transitional authorities of Syria have said to AFP that a number of days ago, its leader was arrested in a Dubai airport, Al-Monitor reported on April 28th.

Issam Buwaydani had led the faction, Jaish al-Islam, over the last decade. The faction used to control the Eastern Ghouta area which is near the capital, Damascus.

One of the anonymous sources said: “We do not know the reasons for his arrest.” The source also said that Buwaydani had been on a private trip to the UAE.
