Morocco’s Justice and Development Party leader secures second term

The Justice and Development Party of Morocco re-elected Abdelilah Benkirane for its secretary-general position for another term, prompting a new call for a resolution to the Gaza conflict, Middle East Monitor reported on April 28th.
Having gained 974 votes, Benkirane got 69% of the vote. His opponents Idriss Azami Idrissi got 374 votes and Abdullah Bouanou secured 42. The secretary-general commended his opponents who reportedly stood by him during his address.
Benkirane’s term is expected to proceed until 2029. Benkirane called on Israel to work towards achieving a deal with the Palestinians while there is the opportunity to do so. He said: “Palestine will remain our primary issue.”
