World’s only research centre for skin disease destroyed by Sudan war

The world’s only research centre for a tropical skin disease has been destroyed due to the conflict in Sudan, according to the centre’s director, Al-Monitor via AFP reported on April 24th.

The disease, known as Mycetoma, commonly affects farmers and is prompted by bacteria or fungi. It typically reaches the body by entering through cuts. The infectious disease impacts skin, muscle and bone.

Director of the Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC), Ahmed Fahal, said to AFP: “The centre and all its infrastructure were destroyed during the war in Sudan.” Fahal added that data from over four decades was consequently lost.
