Burnt bodies found after Israeli strikes kill 17 people

Rescuers recovered burnt bodies from a shelter for uprooted people, as Israeli strikes killed at least 25 individuals, Al-Monitor via AFP reported on April 23rd.

“Hamas has given the criminal occupation excuses to commit its crimes in the Gaza Strip,” said Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas. “The most prominent [excuse] being the holding of hostages,” he added.

The shelter was previously functioning as a school. The UK, Germany, and France called on Israel to end its obstruction of humanitarian aid going into Gaza.

Israel’s army claimed it “struck a gathering of terrorists operating within a Hamas and Islamic Jihad command and control centre,” at the school.

On March 18th, Israel restarted its military operations in Gaza, causing the fragile ceasefire to end. Civil Defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal added that they recovered a number of burnt bodies following a blaze caused by the bombing.

The ceasefire saw the liberation of 33 hostages in return for roughly 1,800 Palestinian prisoners.

Abbas said: “I’m the one paying the price, our people are paying the price, not Israel.” The president also noted that “every day there are deaths.”

On April 22nd alone, Israeli airstrikes targeted the Gaza Strip, killing at least 25 Palestinians, Middle East Eye via AFP reported.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu On April 23rd compared Hamas with “Nazis, like Hitler.”

“They want to kill, to destroy all the Jews. They openly declare their intent to destroy the Jewish state, and that will not happen,” Netanyahu declared, as Israel observed Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Aid agencies report that Israel has displaced most of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents at least once. On April 22nd, Israel’s forces said they targeted nearly 40 “engineering vehicles,” and accused them of being used for “terror purposes.” The UK, France, and Germany warned of “an acute risk of starvation, epidemic disease and death” in Gaza.
