Lawyers call Tunisian trial of opposition figures fabricated

Capture

Lawyers condemned the long sentences given to opposition figures in Tunisia in a recent mass trial, claiming the trial is fabricated as well as baseless, and saying they will appeal the decision.

A Tunis court on April 19th gave prison sentences which were up to 66 years to roughly 40 people, such as open critics of Kais Saied, the Tunisian president, Al-Monitor via AFP reported on April 21st.

Among the various charges, the defendants were accused of “conspiracy against state security,” their lawyers said. Defence lawyer Samir Dilou said to reporters: “They still haven’t told us how the defendants conspired against the state.”
