Prince Harry’s charity cuts ties with group over Palestinian remarks

A charity set up by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has ended its association with the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition, following controversial pro-Palestinian statements made by its founder, Middle East Eye reported on April 16th.

Since 2023, the charity, known as the Archewell Foundation, had provided almost £42,000 (around $55,700) in grants to the MMWC. However, the foundation severed ties after learning of the founder Janan Najeeb’s remarks, which were brought to light by NewsNation.

Najeeb, a Palestinian-American, had referred to Israel as an “apartheid state” and urged for an arms embargo on Israel as well as the “liberation of Palestine.” Najeeb also used the slogan “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” widely seen as anti-Zionist. The Archewell Foundation condemned her views, emphasising that they “have zero tolerance for hateful words, actions or propaganda.”

In a letter to Najeeb, Archewell explained that her statements contradicted the foundation’s values. Despite their philanthropic support for Afghan women in Milwaukee, the foundation clarified that its mission focuses on promoting positive change without endorsing divisive rhetoric.

The incident adds to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Prince Harry. This latest controversy reflects upon the broader topic surrounding the royal family’s evolving relationship with Israel. It was not until 2018 that a member of the royal family visited Israel on a formal level. That year, Prince William, Prince Harry’s brother, went to the country to mark the 70th anniversary of Israeli independence.
