Israeli supporter confirmed as new US ambassador to Israel

Israeli supporter, Mike Huckabee, has been confirmed as the next US ambassador to Israel, following a Senate vote of 53 to 46, the Middle East Eye via Reuters reported on April 9th.

The former Arkansas Governor is a controversial choice for the position considering his strong stance in favour of Jewish settlements in Palestinian territories. Which, are considered illegal under international law. In 2017, he told CNN that “there is no such thing as the West Bank.” He has also previously voiced support for annexing the West Bank.

During his Senate confirmation hearing, however, Huckabee tempered his past rhetoric. He denied advocating for the expulsion of Palestinians.

His appointment comes at a tense time, with no resolution in sight for the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Democratic Senator Jerry Nadler argued Huckabee is “woefully unfit” for the role. Furthermore, many US rights groups have expressed their disapproval of his “extreme anti-Palestinian views.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Huckabee’s confirmation a “great day for the Israeli-American alliance”, and described Huckabee as a “dear friend.” Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, repeated that sentiment, saying the appointment would strengthen ties.

President Donald Trump also praised Huckabee. He said: “He’s going to bring home the bacon . . . even though bacon isn’t too big in Israel.”

Huckabee now steps into a highly sensitive diplomatic role during a very volatile period, amid aid shortages and resumed assaults in Gaza.
