Lebanon: Israel kills four in ceasefire agreement breach

At least four people were killed in southern Lebanon after Israeli drone strikes targeted the area, Al Jazeera reported on March 27th.
The event marks a violation of the fragile ceasefire agreement in place since November 2024 between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah.
French President Emmanuel Macron criticized Israel’s actions, deeming them unjustified. He added that there was no activity to warrant such an attack, reported Reuters on March 28th. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has been in Paris meeting with President Macron to discuss economic reforms and how to provide stability in Lebanon amid rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
Macron said: “The framework agreed upon by Lebanon and Israel was not respected today by Israel, unilaterally, and without us having either information or proof of the triggering event.”
Israel reportedly bombed a building in Beirut’s southern suburbs. This marked Israel’s first major airstrike on Beirut in months, and posed a serious test to the fragile ceasefire.
The November ceasefire stipulated that Hezbollah must remove weapons from the south of Lebanon, that Israeli forces should withdraw, and that Lebanon should deploy its country’s army in the region. Lebanon, Hezbollah and Israel have all accused each other of violating the truce.
