Emmerson Mnangagwa, the president of Zimbabwe, has picked a new army chief ahead of protests which are set to take place on March 31st, the BBC reported on March 28th.

The protests have been called by a number of war veterans who want the president to step down. Emmanuel Matatu, the former major general, takes up the new role with immediate effect.

The president’s former supporters have reportedly called for him to resign, over corruption and mismanagement. Mnangagwa had suddenly made the outgoing army chief Lt Gen Anselem Sanyatwe become sports, arts and culture minister, earlier in the week.
