South Sudan on the verge of civil war, UN warns

South Sudan is on the verge of a restored civil war, according to a top UN official, as violence has continued and a peace process has failed to make progress, France 24 reported on March 25th.

Nicolas Haysom said the situation taking place in the country is “dire” and that global strategies to broker a peaceful resolution could only come to fruition if President Salva Kiir and his vice president, Riek Machar are happy to engage “and put the interests of their people ahead of their own.”

There was a sense of optimism when South Sudan attained independence from Sudan in 2011, following a conflict.
