Tunisia has declared that it has withdrawn from the human rights court of the African Union, pointing towards the government’s lack of attention towards rights problems and cases in Tunisia, Middle East Monitor via AFP reported on March 23rd.

In an announcement on March 20th, Tunisia declared “the withdrawal of its recognition of the competence of the (African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights) to accept cases from individuals and non-governmental organisations.”

The move comes during a period in which Tunis is entering authoritarian rule. Leaving the court means that people and human rights groups cannot bring cases against the authorities of the country.
