740,000 pro-Assad fighters at risk as Syria rethinks citizenship

Syria’s interim government revealed that it could soon implement measures to revoke citizenship given to foreign fighters brought into the country, to strengthen the Assad-led regime, with up to 740,000 people affected, The New Arab reported on March 21st.

Abdullah Abdullah, Director General of Civil Affairs in Syria, said the revocation of citizenships would be applied to all foreign nationals who were given citizenship in Syria by Assad, in return for fighting for his government during the civil-war of almost 14 years. This includes people from other Arab nations.

The move follows clashes on the border between Syria and Lebanon, which involved Hezbollah-associated clans who had been given Syrian territory by the former regime.
