Algeria reopens border with Morocco to return 74 migrants

Algeria temporarily opened its borders with Morocco to repatriate 74 migrants from Morocco who were detained because they had tried to enter Europe illegally, signalling cooperation between the two countries on problems of migration, Asharq Al-Awsat reported on March 11th.

The repatriations were announced by The Moroccan Association for Assisting Migrants in Difficult Situations. The repatriations happened on February 27th and March 6th. Respectively, 42 and 32 people were handed over.

A lot of the migrants had been in Algerian detention centres or prisons for months, while others finished their sentences but were still detained over unpaid fines.
