The assault extended to the looting of properties. Food and livestock were stolen, and numerous homes were deliberately set ablaze.

Eyewitness accounts have highlighted the severe nature of the attacks, where militia members engaged in the looting of 2,000 cattle. The attackers also reportedly hurled racist abuses at the villagers, indicating a deep-seated ethnic hostility.

Jean-Baptiste Gallopin, senior crisis, conflict and arms researcher at HRW, said: “Armed groups fighting alongside the Sudanese Armed Forces have carried out violent abuses against civilians in their latest offensive in Gezira state.”

“The Sudanese authorities should urgently investigate all reported abuses and hold to account those responsible, including the commanders of the Sudan Shield Forces.”
