Only armed forces should defend the country – Lebanon PM
Lebanon’s Prime Minister has said that only the country’s armed forces should defend the country in the instance of war, Asharq Al-Awsat reported on February 25th.
Nawaf Salam was selected to create a new government in January following Israel and Hezbollah’s destructive war which caused the deaths of more than 4,000 people and led to large-scale devastation.
Over tens of years, Hezbollah has maintained its weapons claiming this is needed to protect Lebanon against Israel. However, there have been calls for the group to disarm from Lebanon. These calls have escalated in the most recent war that ended when a ceasefire, brokered by the US, was implemented on November 27th.
