Algerian minister arrives in Spain, ending diplomatic freeze

Brahim Merad, the interior minister of Algeria visited Spain on February 24th, which is the most high-level visit between the two nations since Algiers cut its ties with Madrid almost three years ago, according to The New Arab.

Merad met with Fernando Grande-Marlaska, his Spanish counterpart on February 24th in Madrid. Grande-Marlaska commended Algier’s efforts to close smuggling networks which have ferried migrants in the Mediterranean.

Grande-Marlaska said: “The essential work Algeria has done to fight mafia trading in human lives has led to the dismantling of numerous criminal organisations at the source.”
