Decision to release Libyan war criminal deemed a mistake

The release of alleged Libyan war criminal was deemed a mistake by the Italian jurist, Aniello Nappi, the WSWS reported on February 10th.
According to the reading of the case of Jurist Aniello Nappi in the Sistema Penale on February 12th, the Italian court’s refusal to validate the arrest was based on a misinterpretation of the law.
Nicknamed “Almasri”, Osama Najim, who is a Libyan warlord and the head of Libya’s judicial police, was arrested in Turin under an International Criminal Court arrest warrant. It was alleged that he had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity since 2015 in Mitiga prison.
Italy released the Libyan detainee on the grounds that the Minister of justice had not been consulted prior to his arrest, as the ministry deals with all ICC matters.
Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni was put under investigation, over Najim’s release and repatriation. Meloni said on January 28th that she has been accused of embezzlement as well as aiding and encouraging a criminal act, in relation to the case.
Under Najim’s control, Mitiga prison was known for systematic torture and extrajudicial killings. The prison also became known for the enforced disappearance of political dissidents, migrants, and suspected opponents of the leading militias.
According to WSWS, Italy has major economic interests in Libya, especially within the energy sector. Libya is a longtime supplier of gas for Italy with Italian energy company ENI (Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi) directly involved in the extraction and export of oil and natural gas.
