The UK intends to ease its sanctions on Syria following Bashar al-Assad’s fall from power, according to a government announcement, The New Arab reported on February 13th.

The Syrian government is hoping to convince western capitals that the jihadist origins of the rebels that overthrew Assad after 14 years in power, do not bear any relevance to the present day.

Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty said: “They will include the relaxation of restrictions that apply to the energy, transport and finance sectors.” Doughty added that MP’s would have to initially engage in debates for their proposals.
