50 militants killed in over a fortnight in West Bank

The Israeli military said on February 2nd that it had killed at least 50 militants during over a fortnight of military operations to “thwart terrorism” in the occupied West Bank, according to AL-Monitor via AFP.
In a statement, the military said it “destroyed several buildings” in the Jenin refugee camp that “were being used as terrorist infrastructure.” The US has condemned Hamas for building military hubs in or under civilian areas – such as hospitals and schools.
The Jenin refugee camp has long been a hub for military activity, home to displaced Palestinians and several UNRWA aid workers. The Jenin camp is home to four schools and a health centre, implemented by UNRWA, and has experienced the highest rates of poverty in the area.
In January the military announced that it had launched a full-scale offensive, nicknamed “Iron Wall”, in the West Bank to root out Palestinian militants in the Jenin region. The Palestinian foreign ministry released a statement in response to the assault, saying it was a “brutal scene” and criticised the IDF for choosing to “blow up large neighbourhoods.”
“Explosions were heard throughout the Jenin city and parts of neighbouring towns,” Palestinian news agency WAFA reported. The outlet added that the Israeli military has “simultaneously detonated about 20 buildings.”
Israel’s Defence Force confirmed it destroyed 23 buildings in its mission that “eliminated over 35 terrorists and apprehended more than 100 wanted individuals.”
The Palestinian ministry later revealed that two civilians were also killed by the Israeli military in separate events. An elderly man, 73, was killed by gunfire in the refugee camp. Mohammed Amjad Hadoush, 27, was also killed as a result of Israeli gunfire in Al-Aroub camp located in the southern West Bank.
On February 2nd the IDF announced that it will be extending its counterterrorism operation to five villages. Leaflets, printed in Arabic, were distributed to inform the local population that the mission will “eradicate armed criminals, the lackeys of Iran.”
