19 dead in Syria after car bomb explosion

A car bomb has killed at least 19 people on the outskirts of the northern Syrian city of Manbij on February 3rd, Asharq Al-Awsat via Reuters reported.

The incident was the seventh car bomb explosion in Manbij in just over a month, according to Munir Mustafa, the deputy director of civil defense.

The car exploded next to a vehicle transporting mostly female agricultural workers. The victims include 18 women and one man, with 15 others wounded, Mohammad Ahmad, a nurse at the hospital told The Associated Press.

The office of Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria’s newly elected President, denounced the “terrorist” attack, Al Jazeera reported

“This crime will not pass without the strongest punishment for its perpetrators, so they become an example for anyone who considers compromising Syria’s security or harming its people,” the presidency said.

In a separate incident, four civilians were killed and nine wounded when a car detonated in Manbij on February 1st, state news agency SANA reported, referring to civil defence officials. Despite the fall of the Assad regime in December of last year, Manbij, a province in northeastern Aleppo, is still enduring violence and bloodshed.

The Syrian National Army, backed by Turkey, took the city of Manbij from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in early December of last year amid a sudden insurgency which resulted in the overthrowing of Bashar al-Assad

No group has claimed responsibility for the car explosion.
