Washington is urging senior Lebanese officials to stop Hezbollah or its allies from nominating the country’s new finance minister, according to five sources who are familiar with the matter, in a bid to restrict Hezbollah’s control over the state, The New Arab via Reuters reported on January 31st.

The direct US interference in Lebanon’s sectarian politics seemingly intends to benefit from changes in the power balance in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East, with Hezbollah weakened from last year’s war with Israel and its Syrian ally Bashar al-Assad’s fall from power.
