Syria’s new leader asks Russia to hand over Assad

Russia has said that it had “frank” talks with Syria’s new de facto leader as it attempts to keep its two military bases in the country, but it refused to comment on what the leader was wanting in return, The New Arab via Reuters reported on January 29th.
A Syrian source who is in tune with the talks told Reuters that the new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa had asked Moscow to hand over former president Bashar al-Assad, who escaped to Russia when he was ousted by Sharaa’s rebels last month.
The Syrian news agency Sana said Damascus also wanted Russia, which supported Assad during the country’s civil war, to restore faith through “concrete measures such as compensation, reconstruction and recovery”.
