Iraq’s Kurdish region struggles to form new government

Attempts to create a new government in Iraq’s Kurdistan region have not made any progress as the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) have not managed to agree on the principal leadership positions after the October 20th parliamentary elections, The New Arab reported on January 29th.

The potential political dead end brings a lack of certainty surrounding the region’s governance and has worsened public dissatisfaction amid continuous economic issues.

The election had a voter turnout of 72%, as five of the 100 paramilitary seats were reserved for minority groups. The other 95 reportedly contested among Kurdish factions.
