South Sudan authorities have removed a temporary Facebook and TikTok ban, which came into effect last week after videos showing the alleged killings of South Sudanese Nationals in Sudan had spread, Reuters reported on January 28th.

The graphic images, which caused violent protests and revenge killings in the country, have been taken off of social media sites, the National Communications Authority said in a January 27th letter addressed to telecoms and internet providers.

In the letter, The director of the National Communications Authority, Napoleon Adok Gai, said: “The rise of violence linked to social media content in South Sudan underscores the need for a balanced approach that addresses the root causes of online incitement while protecting the rights of the population.”
