Syria picks new military commander for south

Syrian defence minister, Murhaf Abu Khasra, has selected a new military commander who will oversee the southern region of the country, in a bid to restore government control of the area and provide stability for the security situation, The New Arab reported on January 23rd.

An old commander of the Sunni Islamist group Ahrar Al-Sham, Binyan Ahmed Al-Hariri, has been selected to lead the military of the southern Horan region, the majority of which, has been controlled by various armed groups.

Horan spans across the country’s borders with Israel and Jordan and encompasses areas of Quneitra, Deraa and Al-Suweida governorates.
